What is an ATS?
Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to scan and filter CVs before a recruiter ever sees them.
If your CV is not formatted correctly, it may be rejected automatically.
- ATS scans keywords
- It reads plain text, not design
- It ranks candidates based on relevance
Correct CV Structure
1. Contact Information
Include full name, phone number, professional email address, and LinkedIn profile (optional).
2. Professional Summary
A 3–4 line summary highlighting your qualification, field of study and career goals.
3. Education
List most recent qualification first. Include institution, degree, and graduation year.
4. Work Experience / Internships
Use bullet points. Focus on measurable results.
5. Skills
Include technical skills and relevant soft skills.
Common CV Mistakes
- Using tables or graphics
- Adding profile photos (not required in SA corporate roles)
- Overdesigning with columns
- Submitting in .jpg or .png format
- Using unprofessional email addresses
